We are the South America Team of Country Coordinators at Amnesty International UK (AIUK). Our principal role is to coordinate the delivery in the UK of Amnesty campaigns on South American countries, including those relating to specific Individuals and Communities at Risk. The underlying research and the development of campaign strategies is undertaken by the Americas Regional Office of Amnesty’s International Secretariat based in Mexico City. We seek to inspire  Amnesty UK’s network of local groups and other activists around the country to get engaged in these campaigns, issues and actions.

As a key part of our role, we seek to develop close relations with staff in the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to keep them updated on Amnesty reports, campaigns and other human rights issues relating to South America and to encourage the UK Government to support the aims of Amnesty’s campaigns. We also seek to develop relations with the London Embassies of South American countries, including with their Ambassadors, on these issues. We ask them to communicate Amnesty’s concerns and demands to their home governments.

We build relationships with other organisations, individual activists and diaspora groups interested in South America. We design and deliver nationwide campaigns – including leading on our Individual and Communities at Risk cases.

We work closely with staff at AIUK – mainly in the Community Organising, Individuals at Risk and Advocacy teams and keep them informed of our activities on a regular basis. We are all volunteers, appointed by AIUK.
